Spring School 2027: Action Research in Planetary Health

Join us for a five-day intensive spring school at the University of Bayreuth at the intersection of Planetary Health and Action Research. Planetary Health is an interdisciplinary field examining the relationships between global environmental change and human health, spanning scientific, political, social, and educational dimensions. This program brings together early-career researchers to engage deeply with this field and to develop their own concrete research projects within it.

Who should apply?

The spring school is open to Master's and PhD students from all disciplines and from universities worldwide. We especially welcome applicants with backgrounds or interests in public health, social sciences, medicine, environmental studies, or science communication. A total of 30 participants will be admitted; the program is conducted in English.

Programme

Eight expert talks cover the breadth of Planetary Health, from policy and health systems to nutrition, mental health, and health literacy. These inputs are complemented by four methodological workshops and dedicated project work sessions in which participants develop their own Action Research project from initial idea to a concrete research protocol, supported by peer feedback and mentoring. The week closes with project presentations. Evening formats including a Planetary Health Cinema night and a communal cooking session based on the Planetary Health Diet add a social and practical dimension to the program.

Before the spring school, all participants take part in an online preparatory session introducing Planetary Health and Action Research, so that they arrive ready to engage with a project idea in hand.

Costs and Practical Information

The participation fee is €100, which includes lunch, coffee and snacks throughout the day, and one dinner. Accommodation is not included but can be arranged in shared housing with other participants, or organized independently.

Travel Stipends

Three travel stipends of up to €1,000 are available for participants from low- and middle-income countries, applicable alongside the general application.
